Charles Ramsey says he's broke despite Cleveland kidnapping fame

Charles Ramsey became an instant celebrity when he gave colorful interviews to the media about his role in the incredible rescue of the three Cleveland kidnapping victims. After weeks of light-hearted stories about the community's gratitude -- he was offered free McDonald's for life, charitable donations etc. -- Ramsey said that his 15 minutes of fame have only made life worse.

In a recent Daily Mail interview, Ramsey discussed his financial situation with his signature brevity.

"I’m broke bro, and that’s the truth," Ramsey said.

"I don’t have an address, I don’t live anywhere. I go from house to house, to friend to friend, to family member to family member," he said. "What I’ve been doing for the past four weeks is wearing out my welcome with everybody who knows me."

Ramsey said that while most people assume that notoriety has made him rich, he said he's been borrowing money from relatives and trying to raise money through his website, charlesramseylive.com.

He said that his personal celebrity has made it hard for him to get a job.

But Ramsey's former neighbors, who claimed to have played a more important role in helping the Cleveland kidnapping victims escape, think he has been wasteful with his success.

"Charles has been living it up, he's been drinking and smoking," Aurora Marti, 75, said.

He bought a new BMW and came by a few weeks ago at night telling my son that he was going to be rich. He made a T-shirt with his face on it that he was selling for $25. I told my neighbor to buy one so I could burn it.
