Nigella Lawson's husband Charles Saatchi announced he is divorcing the celebrity chef through an article published in the Daily Mail on Sunday.

"I'm sorry to announce that Nigella Lawson and I are getting divorced." Saatchi wrote. "I feel that I have clearly been a disappointment to Nigella during the last year or so, and I am disappointed that she was advised to make no public comment to explain that I abhor violence of any kind against women, and have never abused her physically in any way."

Saatchi's announcement came a month after he was seen apparently choking Lawson, 53, after the couple got into an argument at a restaurant in London.

A day after the incident, Saatchi, 70, said in a statement that the pictures of him with his hands around Lawson's neck were taken during a "playful tiff." However, Lawson's rep confirmed the following day that the celebrity chef and her chilren had moved out of the house they shared with Saatchi. In the same way, London police confirmed they had issued a warning in connection to a choking incident involving Lawson.

According to Saatchi's statement his actions weren't violent in any way. He added that both he and Lawson were "intrinsically tactile people."

"Yes my hands were around her neck, and they had been touching her arm. Difficult as it may be to believe, for those who have seen the pictures, there was no pressure applied to her," to former advertising tycoon wrote. "In fact it was merely a gesture - one to which a still photograph gives a wholly different and incorrect implication."

Saatchi added that he was sorry they two had gotten in a row and even more sorry that it had ended their marriage.

"I wish Nigella only the best for her future, and for her continuing global succes. She remains the most wonderful woman in the world. I feel very fortunate to have had such a lovely wife for many years," he wrote.
