Portland, Ore., residents are calling for local authorities to place barriers along the Vista Bridge, dubbed "Suicide Bridge," after a 15-year-old girl jumped to her death on Wednesday, KGW reported.
Citizen groups held a vigil at the bridge on Saturday, where they told KGW that they hoped to raise awareness about suicide prevention and the need for barriers to keep people from jumping.
Changes to the historic structure, built in 1926, would need approval from the State Historic Preservation Office, according to the Oregonian. But the recent rash of suicides have made public officials increasingly interested in bridge barriers.
"The mayor would like to see some prevention methods taken," a rep from Mayor Charlie Hales' office told the Oregonian. "But it's an issue of finding the funding. We've explored several sources and continue to look."
Barriers could cost up to $3 million, said David O'Longaigh, of Portland's Transportation Bureau.
