Ben Silbermann, the CEO of the wildly popular social pinboard site Pinterest, sat down at the D11 conference in California Wednesday to talk with All Things Digital's executive editor Kara Swisher.

Silbermann chatted about the future of digital media, the rise of mobile apps, and turning a successful tool into a moneymaking one.

"Right now we don't make money -- it makes bookkeeping more straightforward," Silbermann said. "But, when we think about our mission -- we think there's a direct link between what people buy and what they want to purchase in the future. When we do announce our monetization plans, we want to make it easier for people to discover things they love -- we want to help people take the next step."

Despite having no revenue model, Pinterest is valued at $2.5 billion, making Silbermann's company one to watch.

And despite not making any money, Pinterest has been given some leeway, thanks to its impressive growth, particularly in apps.

"When we released our mobile apps, we were taking bets on how long it'd take for those to surpass our web traffic," he said. "I figured it'd take a few weeks. It was literally the day it was released."
