Former "Today" host Katie Couric said she was approached to return to the show as Ann Curry was being pushed out.

In an interview with Howard Stern on SiriusXM Satellite Radio Tuesday, Couric and Stern chatted about her former co-host Matt Lauer -- and the crush she nursed on him back when he had more hair -- and "low-level" discussions about a possible return to the show.

"There were some cautious overtures to me to possibly come back to the 'Today' show, but then they sort of evaporated," she said. "For me, ['Today'] was the best job."

Couric was at the desk of "Today" from 1991 to 2006. She has been the host of the talk show "Katie" on ABC since 2012.
