TV correspondent killed in Syria

A reporter for Syrian state-owned television was killed while covering fighting near the border with Lebanon, the latest in a string of deaths of members of the media since the bloody conflict began two years ago.

Al-Ikhbariyah TV reporter Yara Abbas and her team were attacked by rebels near Qusair, in Homs province, the Syrian Information Ministry said. Abbas was killed and other members of her crew were wounded.

Qusair, which lies near the road connecting Damascus to Syria's Mediterranean coast and is under rebel control, has seen fierce fighting for more than a week.

Since the two-year civil war began, Syria has been the deadliest country in the world for journalists, according to research by the Committee to Protect Journalists. At least 37 members of the media have been killed there since 2011, targeted by fighters on both sides of the conflict.
