Basketball star Brittney Griner made WNBA history in her very first game in the league.

Griner, 22, had her WNBA debut for the Phoenix Mercury in Monday's game against the Chicago Sky. In the fourth quarter, Griner became the first WNBA player to dunk twice in one game. Griner adds the seventh and eighth dunks in WNBA history to her record.

But Griner's playing did not get the team past the Sky -- fellow newbie Elena Delle Donne had her debut and took the Sky to a 102-80 win over the Mercury.

Griner and Delle Donne were the first and second draft picks, respectively.

Mercury coach Corey Gaines called the game a "butt kicking," ESPN reported.

Griner did not wax poetic on her first game in the league -- instead, she said she needs to stop jumping, as her 6'8 body is tall enough. She looked forward to improving and continuing to play.

"I don't think it went as planned," Griner told ESPN. "I wish it was a win." Griner finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.

The Mercury has been tapped as the team to beat this season, but with Delle Donne dominating with her Sky, Griner and the team have work to do.

"Whether you are a rookie or a veteran today, it doesn't matter," Mercury guard Diana Taurasi said. "This was a nice little wake-up call for us in the first game of the season."
