Pamela Beck, 51, dropped her purse while standing in line at a Florida Starbucks, causing a loaded .25-caliber Titan handgun to fire, accidentally shooting her friend in the leg.
Investigators say Beck's arms were full with packages and she dropped her purse when reaching for her wallet to pay, reports WTSP. The semi-automatic pistol was inside a small gun bag at the bottom of the "spare" purse.
The bullet struck Amie Peterson, 38, above the knee, and she was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Police say Beck does not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, and that it was a gift from her father she had forgotten was loaded inside her purse. Prosecutors are now deciding whether to press charges.
Gun advocates have long applauded Starbucks for allowing customers to carry guns inside their stores. Starbucks maintains that they only follow state and local laws, and refrain from taking any position in the gun debate.
The coffee company released a statement Sunday evening, expressing their sympathies.
"At Starbucks, the safety and security of our partners who are our employees and customers is our top priority. We are aware of the accident that took place and are thankful that nobody was seriously injured. We wish those involved a speedy recovery and at this time we are working with local authorities and defer any specific questions on the investigation to them."
