Regions Hospital's morgue officials said the baby had been wrapped in linen and was mistaken for laundry. After learning about what happened the hospital sent for the body and secured it according to proper procedures.

"This was a terrible mistake, and we are deeply sorry," said Chris Boese, chief nursing officer, Regions Hospital. "We have processes in place that should have prevented this but did not. We are working to identify the gap in our system, and to make sure this does not happen again."

Regions Hospital, located in St Paul, Minn., is gathering all the necessary information before they report the incident to he Ramsey County Medical Examiner's office, the police departments of Red Wing and St. Paul, and the Minnesota Department of Health.
