Student's text message before fatal car accident: 'Seeya soon'

Alexander Heit was responding to a text message when he drifted into oncoming traffic, jerked the steering wheel and rolled his car off the road on April 3.

The 22-year-old University of Northern Colorado student died shortly after the incident in Greeley, Colo., The Greeley Tribune reported Tuesday.

Heit's phone was found in the car with his final text message cut mid-sentence. His parents have decided to share a picture of the phone, hoping it will serve as reminder of the dangers of texting and driving.

"Sounds good my man, seeya soon, ill tw," read Heit's last text.

According to witnesses, Heit had his head down when he lost control of the car and drifted toward the oncoming lane in Greeley, where UNC is located.

Police officers said the oncoming driver tried to slow down and moved over seconds before Heit looked up and jerked the steering wheel to the other side of the road, rolling and flipping the vehicle.

On Tuesday, the student's mother Sharon Heit, spoke through a statement released by the Greeley Police Department:

“I can’t bear the thought of anyone else having to go through something like this,” she wrote. “Please, vow to never, NEVER text and drive. In a split second you could ruin your future, injure or kill others, and tear a hole in the heart of everyone who loves you.”
