Chris Brown addressed his much hyped relationship to singer Rihanna in an interview on the "Today" show on Monday.

Asked how he'd dealt with the battery charges his on-again girlfriend filed against him in 2009, Brown said he had been "humbled by the whole experience."

"From me losing everything, you know, to me having to regain public opinion or whatever it is," the singer told Matt Lauer. "But most importantly, you know, knowing that what I did was totally wrong and having to kind of deal with myself and kind of forgive myself in the same breath and being able to apologize to, you know, Rihanna and be that man that can be who is a man."

Regarding people who still don't believe he has recovered, the singer appears to be taking the high road.

"I think everybody is entitled to their opinion. For me, it's just a learning process. You know, I have to just take it one day at a time. I can't make everybody like me ... it's about me being positive," he said. "Everything that I'm doing with my music is to hopefully inspire the world and inspire people who have been on my situation, even everybody who's trying to learn from me."

Questioned about his current relationship status with Rihanna, the singer admitted they were together as a couple, adding they were "fine."

Brown told Lauer he has learned a lot after completing the 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling and that for him it's all about "knowing that what I did was wrong, and never doing it again. So as far as me and [Rihanna] are concerned, she knows my heart, and I know her heart. So I'm not really focused on the negative."

As for his music, Brown said his new sounds are more mature than they used to be given all the time he's had to grow as an artist and a person.

Brown's latest single "Fine China" premiered today and his album is set to release in July or August 2013.
