The Supreme Court of the United States heard arguments for and against the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the California law prohibiting same-sex marriage.

The case to maintain the law was argued by Charles Cooper, on behalf of Dennis Hollingsworth, the leader of Proposition 8 supporter ProtectMarriage.com. The case to uphold the lower court ruling and strike the law was argued by Ted Olson and Donald Verrilli, on behalf of plaintiffs Kristin Perry and Sandra Stier, a married couple, and partners Jeff Zarillo and Paul Katami.
