In a video announcing her support for legalizing gay marriage, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton challenged Americans to live up to "our highest ideals and continue our long march to a more perfect union."

"L.G.B.T. citizens... deserve the rights of citizenship," Clinton said. "That includes marriage."

"That's why I support marriage for lesbian and gay couples," she said. "I support it personally, and as a matter of policy and law embedded in a broader effort to advance equality and opportunity for L.G.B.T. Americans and all Americans."

Clinton's previous position on same-sex marriage had been mixed. In 2003, she supported civil unions, while opposing marriage itself, and in 2006, as a senator in New York, she said she supported "full equality" under civil unions.

In 2007, she said she supported the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as one man and one woman.
