Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio., surprised Republicans last week with the announcement that he had reversed his stance against same-sex marriage after his son came out to him in 2011.

Asked whether a gay child would inspire him to support gay marriage in Sunday's interview, House Speaker John Boehner called Portman a "great friend and long-time ally" but added that his own position would never change.

Host Martha Raddatz: "Can you imagine yourself in a situation where you reversed your decision -- as Portman has on gay marriage -- if a child of yours or someone you love told you they were gay."

Boehner: "Listen, I believe marriage is the union of one man and one woman. It’s what I grew up with, it’s what i believe, it’s what my church teaches me and I can’t imagine that position would ever change."
