George P. Bush runs for office in Texas

George Prescott Bush is the son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush, the nephew of former president George W. Bush and the grandson of former president George H.W. Bush. He filed paperwork Tuesday to run for Texas land commissioner, continuing his family's political dynasty.

In November, Bush filed with the Texas Ethics Commission ensuring he would seek statewide office in 2014 but did not specify which one, leading to speculation that he might run for attorney general or even governor.

The land commissioner administers state-owned lands and mineral resources -- a little-known but powerful position that could well lead to higher posts in future.

Bush's mother, Columba, was born in Mexico, and Spanish-speaking George P. Bush is considered a rising star among conservative Hispanics. Hispanics now make up 35 percent of the Texas population. They tend to vote overwhelmingly Democratic, but a Democrat hasn't won statewide office since 1994.

Bush grew up in Florida and went to law school at the University of Texas, before becoming a real estate investor and business consultant. Although this will be his first time running for elected office, Bush has been active in politics for years. He was promoted to deputy finance chairman of the Texas Republican Party last year.
