Has Russell Crowe crossed the line from eccentric star to totally nuts?

The Australian actor tweeted a video Tuesday, claiming to have captured footage of a UFO, and setting off speculation he had lost it completely.

"Time lapse photos outside RC's Woolloomooloo office (THESE ARE REAL!)," he wrote, with a link to a YouTube video.

Crowe's Aussie rep told Australia's Daily Telegraph the footage was captured four years ago in Sydney by friend and cinematographer Duane Manwiller.

But was Crowe just playing crazy to drum up publicity for an under-performing movie?

A few hours before the UFO announcement, Crowe had tweeted a complaint that his recent film, "Broken City", wasn't getting the necessary publicity.

"So apparently @BrokenCityMov is released in Australia on Friday... who knew? Very subtle release campaign."

So far, Crowe seems to be sticking to his story, defending the video from claims it was faked.

"This is 3 photo's in order, nothing added," he tweeted.

Responses from followers ranged from amused attempts to explain the strange lights to incredulity, but one tweeter, Aaron Stewart-Ahn, hit the nail on the head:

"You know what's crazier than UFOs?" Stewart-Ahn replied. "That you set up a camera to capture fruit bats!"
