Baby born after mom killed in crash dies

The baby born after his parents were killed in a hit-and-run crash in Brooklyn Sunday has died after more than a day of desperate efforts to save his life.

The child, a boy, was delivered prematurely by cesarean section after his mother Raizy Glauber and father Nachman, both 21, were killed when a BMW struck the livery cab in which they were riding shortly after midnight Sunday, the New York Times reported.

Raizy Glauber was 24 weeks pregnant and seeking medical attention because she could not feel the baby, a family member said.

The expectant parents were taken to separate hospitals after the crash - Nachman Glauber to Beth Israel Medical Center and Raizy Glauber to Bellevue, which specializes in complicated emergencies. Both were pronounced dead on arrival.

Family and friends in the tight-knit Orthodox Jewish community to which the Glaubers belonged were further devasted by the child's death, after having taken solace in his survival.

“It’s very hard for me,” Raizy Glauber’s father, Yitzchok Silberstein, told mourners at a funeral Sunday. “But I have to say that whatever God does is right, even if I do not understand, he has a plan.”

Police said they were seeking the BMW's driver, who disappeared with a passenger after the wreck. It is still unclear if one or both drivers was at fault, police said, but the BMW's driver is expected to face charges of fleeing the scene of an accident.

The cab driver, Pedro Nuñez Delacruz, was treated for minor injuries at Bellevue and released. His application to use his 2008 Toyota Camry as a livery cab was still pending, and he should not have picked up passengers, the Taxi and Limousine Commission told the Times.
