Lea Michele and Cory Monteith were only an on-screen couple at first, but "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy knew it was only a matter of time before they got together.

Walking the red carpet at the PaleyFest Icon Awards in Beverly Hills this week, Murphy told E! Online that his lead co-stars had noticeable chemistry from their very first scene.

"I directed them in their first scene together and they had that sort of chemistry that you can't fake, and I said, 'Uh-oh,'" he added, "so I did kind of know. I take credit."

Michele, who started dating Monteith last year, acknowledged that Murphy had brought them together.

"Yes, I would definitely say he is my matchmaker for sure," she said at the event.

Montheith, Michele and other members of the "Glee" cast were at the Icon Awards Wednesday night to honor Murphy's work as a television showrunner. Michele congratulated him over Twitter:
