Walter Johnson was paralyzed by a gunshot wound in 1977, and he recently died at the age of 62 from medical complications stemming from the gunshot. Since Johnson's death was a result of the shooting, police have declared it a homicide and opened a murder investigation.

Police say Johnson was driving to his parents’ home April 9, 1977, when three men blocked the roadway with their car on San Carlos Way. The three men walked up to Johnson, who was still in his car, investigators say. At the time of the incident, investigators gathered evidence and conducted interviews, but never identified the three suspects.
