Already the most-watched video on YouTube, PSY's Gangnam Style becomes the first video to hit one billion views Friday.
YouTube says it updates the view count of popular videos every few hours, so it may not become clear immediately when the milestone hits.
The video crossed the 1 billion-view mark sometime between 10:30 and 10:50 a.m. ET Friday.
The unlikely hit video became a smash hit over the summer as a heretofore unknown South Korean rapper PSY became one of the most recognizable faces in music. The song was everywhere, spawning memes and spoofs from NASA ("NASA Johnson Style) to civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis ("Voting Gangnam Style")
"Gangnam Style" overtook Justin Bieber's "Baby" at the end of November, and since then, PSY's song has gained another 200 million views, compared to Bieber's 10 million.
#GangnamStyle just became the most watched video @youtube!! #History youtu.be/9bZkp7q19f0 @youtube 에서
