Photos from the White House's first gay marriage proposal (that we know of)

Active duty Marine Corps Captain Matthew Phelps got down on one knee this weekend, proposing to his partner, Ben Schock, for the White House's first ever gay marriage proposal -- as far as anyone knows. Redditor BubbaTap22 managed to snap several photos of the couple's happy moment, which have since gone viral on social media.

The Atlantic Wire reached out to Phelps, who said that he came out publicly as soon as the president repealed the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Phelps also said that while response to the photos has been "overwhelmingly positive," some people don't like his swirly purple tie.

"I think the only negative comments have been critiques of our wardrobe selection. If the worst thing anyone has to say is that they don't like my tie, I think we have come quite a long way," Phelps said.
