The first full trailer for Man of Steel has arrived online, and it makes it clear that Zack Snyder et al are going the somber, emotional route for the new on-screen iteration of Superman.

The trailer expands on the teaser shown at ComicCon over the summer, emphasizing the film's origin story focus.

We see shots of Clark (Henry Cavill) suspended underwater, recalling an accident from his childhood sending a school bus full of kids into a lake where he saves his classmates while revealing his superhuman strength.

"You just have to decide what kind of man you want to grow up to be, Clark," Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) narrates, helpfully summing up the trailer's (if not the film's) theme for us. "Whoever that man is going to change the world."

Catch glimpses of Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Clark's parents Jonathan and Martha Kent, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
