"It's been a long journey, a gradual, hard-walked journey and it's certainly not over yet, but I'm loving every minute of it," Saldana said of her career.

Saldana made her television debut in 1999 on an episode of Law & Order and her first film, Center Stage, was released in 2000.

"I admire you as a person, a wife, a sister, a mother a businesswoman and as an actress," said actor Mila Kunis, who starred alongside Saldana in 2007's After Sex. "While the world knows you for the characters you have played, I have the privilege of knowing the working mom behind the scenes."

Saldana has starred in a number of films, including Crossroads, Drumline, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and The Terminal before being cast as Uhura in 2009's Star Trek, a role she reprised in 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and 2016's Star Trek Beyond.

Also in 2009, Saldana starred as Neytiri in James Cameron's Avatar.

"Her iconic characters Uhura, Neytiri and Gamora are role models for young women," Cameron said. "These are women of courage, intelligence and integrity, they're women that are unbowed and authentic and stand for something."
