FOSHAN, China, July 21 (UPI) -- A mentally ill man attacked 18 kids and a kindergarten teacher in China's Guangdong Province with a wrench before fleeing, local police said Saturday.
Sixteen of the children had head contusions and were under observation. Two others were sent to Foshan hospital but their injuries were not listed as serious.
The Xinhua news service reported the man entered the kindergarten classroom Friday and went after the victims' heads. The teacher, Ouyang Liuxing, fought back and the man then left the area on a motorbike.
"I was frightened by the scene and went to stop him," the teacher told Xinhua. "He hit me in the head with the wrench, but I kicked him in the private parts."
The man, who is in his 40s, was apprehended by police and sent to a hospital after he tried to kill himself. He suffered stab wound to his abdominal area.
