U.S. student drowns in Gulf of Eilat

TEL AVIV, Israel, March 25 (UPI) -- An American aquaculture student drowned while diving in the Gulf of Eilat, in the northern tip of the Red Sea, police reported Thursday.

Police identified the student as Brit Johnson, 26, of Virginia. Johnson studied at the State University of Washington and went to Eilat as volunteer with Israel's National Center for Marine Culture.

A search began after he failed to report to work. Thursday morning his bicycle was found near the beach, Eilat police spokesman Avi Asulin told UPI.

Police, the navy, colleagues and divers at the center went out to sea to search for him.

Police said they found the body some 100 meters from the coast at a depth of 10 meters. Johnson's diving goggles apparently got caught in a rock, Asulin said.
