Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A U.S. service member has died in Afghanistan in a non-combat-related incident, NATO said Friday.

The service member wasn't immediately identified, pending family notification, but was assigned to the Resolute Support Mission.

A "non-combat" death often means the U.S. service member is killed by an infiltrator in the Afghan military. U.S. troops are providing training and support in Afghanistan, but no active fighting help.

The death increases the number of foreign military members to die in Afghanistan this year to 17, Anadolu reported.
