Town trying to save John Coltrane's home

DIX HILLS, N.Y., March 25 (UPI) -- A local historian is searching for a benefactor to buy musician John Coltrane's Dix Hills, N.Y., home to rescue the property from destruction.

Steve Fulgoni wants to preserve as a historical landmark the 3.4 acre property where Coltrane, a jazz saxophonist considered one of America's most influential musicians, once lived, ABC News Online reported Thursday.

The property currently belongs to Ash Agrawal, a developer who plans to subdivide the agreage. Agrawal, who did not know the home belonged to Coltrane, has agreed to sell the property for $1.05 million.

The town's open space committee is considering buying the property, but the cost may be prohibitive. Fulgoni said he hopes a benefactor will come forward with the money.

Coltrane's widow, Alice, said her husband wrote some of his most spiritual music while they lived in the Dix Hills home.

"Preserving the house could serve some purpose," Alice Coltrane said. "I could see it -- people looking at photographs, seeing where he played, where he sat outside and meditated. Maybe they could feel some of that energy."
