Thousands attend WWII memorial service in Japan (12 images)

More than 6,000 people attended a memorial service honoring those who died in World War II during a state-sponsored ceremony in Tokyo on Tuesday, the anniversary of Japan's surrender in 1945.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe delivered a speech expressing remorse for Japan's role in the war. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko also attended.
