Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI lies in state in Vatican City(9 images)

Mourners line up to pay respects to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI as he lies in state inside St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City through January 4, 2023. He died December 31 at age 95. Benedict was elected pope in 2005, following Pope John Paul II's death. He resigned from the papacy at age 85 in 2013, the first pope to resign in 600 years. He was succeeded by Pope Francis.

Benedict's body was clothed in a traditional red cloak. The pope's head, topped by a Bishop mitre, rested on two crimson pillows as his body was carried inside the basilica on a wooden stretcher draped by fine cloth. His hands and fingers were clasped around a rosary. Photo by Stefano Spaziani/UPI
