The Coming of Age Day ceremony, or Seijin Shiki, happens every year on the second Monday of January for those who turned 20 during the year. When a young person turns 20 in Japanese society they have become an adult.
The ceremony takes place in every city ward in Japan. An official from their area will congratulate the group on becoming adults and remind them of their duties and privileges. Then they are on their way to celebrate with their friends and families. Photo by Keizo Mori/UPI
