Protesters ste up pressure on Shinawatra

Protesters are concerned over Yingluck's brother Thaksin's influence over the government.

Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Anti-government protesters in Thailand ignored calls for election by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Instead, they say she should be tried for treason and the rest of her family should call it quits on politics.

Thai protesters worry about Yingluck's brother Thaksin's influence over the government. Thaksin was accused of abusing power while PM of Thailand and is now living in exile rather than serving a term in jail.

"I ask police to arrest Yingluck for treason because she did not meet our orders," protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban said.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has said she hopes the unrest will subside soon. "Although Thailand has been grappling with major political challenges, I appreciate the way in which the Thai authorities have allowed peaceful demonstrations and responded in a restrained manner," she said.
