Feb. 4 (UPI) -- At least 10 people have died and many were wounded during a school shooting at an adult education center in southern Sweden on Tuesday afternoon.

The mass shooting occurred near 12:30 p.m. local time in Orebro, Sweden, but is not suspected to be an act of terrorism.

"This is an awful, exceptional incident -- a nightmare," local police leader Roberto Eid Forest told media. "We do not think there is any terror motive behind this, but it is too early in the investigation to say."

Officials suspect one of those who were wounded during the shooting is the alleged shooter and said the shooter likely acted alone and has died.

Local officials did not say if the alleged shooter died from a self-inflicted wound or was engaged by gunfire from security or police.

The incident happened at Campus Risbergska in Orebro, which is about 125 miles west of Stockholm.

The adult education center is located on a school campus that includes other educational institutions, all of which were locked down following the shooting.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the shooting is the worst in Swedish history, and local police said all of those killed or wounded were found inside the school building, the BBC reported.

At least four of the wounded had been transported to Orebro University Hospital, but the total number of those wounded in the attack has not been announced.

Jonas Claesson, who represents local hospital services, said at least one of those wounded was critically injured.

Police said the incident is being treated as an investigation for attempted murder, arson and aggravated weapons offenses.

One teacher told local media that fewer students had been on campus because it was an exam day and many left for home after testing.

Those students and staff remaining were ordered to shelter in place during the shooting.
