Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Venezuela has freed six U.S. detainees after talks in Caracas between President Nicolas Maduro and Donald Trump's special envoy for special missions, Ric Grenell.
Their names have not been released but there is an image of Grenell posing with them on the plane. In the image he is the third from the right.
Grenell then posted on X with video: "We are home. God bless these Americans."
Grenell said the men had spoken by phone to President Trump to thank him.
"Just been informed that we are bringing six hostages home from Venezuela. Thank you to Ric Grenell and my entire staff. Great job!," Trump posted on Truth Social.
More than 2,200 people have detained by Venezuelan authorities, including at least nine with U.S. citizenship or residency, after nationwide protests over the disputed July 2024 election results, in which Nicolás Maduro claimed his third term.
Washington does not officially recognize Maduro as president.
