Prince William to attend Notre Dame reopening in place of King Charles III

Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Britain's Prince William will attend the official reopening of France's famed Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris Saturday, representing the Royal Family in place of his father, King Charles III.

Prince William will attend the ceremony "at the request of His Majesty's Government on behalf of the United Kingdom," Britain's Royal Family confirmed in a statement Friday.

The Prince of Wales' father King Charles III continues to battle cancer and will not attend the event.

The Archbishop of Paris is formally officiating the Saturday's ceremony, before holding mass on the following Sunday.

The iconic Gothic-style cathedral suffered major damage, including a collapse of the roof during a fire in April of 2019.

At the time, French President Emmanuel Macron promised the massive restoration project would be completed within five years.

Last week, Macron toured the famed landmark in preparation for its re-opening.

Macron will join Prince William and other world leaders at Saturday's official event, including U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump announced earlier this week, he would fly to Paris Saturday to attend the re-opening. The trip will mark his first overseas visit since he was elected in November.

The president-elect previously nominated his daughter's father-in-law, Charles Kushner to serve as U.S. Ambassador to France.
