Dec. 3 (UPI) -- American model Alex Consani has become the first transgender woman to be named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Council's Fashion Awards.

"I'm the first trans woman to win this award!" Consani, 21, told the audience Monday night at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

"Now, more than ever, it's an important conversation that should be had about how to truly support and uplift one another within this industry, especially those who have been made to feel insignificant," Consani added. "Because change is more than possible -- it's needed."

Consani signed with IMG Models in 2019 when she was just 15 years old.

Consani has walked the runway for Tom Ford and modeled for other top labels including Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Burberry and Versace. She became one of the first trans models to appear on the runway in October at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Other models who have won the Model of the Year award include Kate Moss, Bella Hadid and Cara Delevingne.

"I'm screaming. I just won Model of the Year," Consani wrote Monday in a post on Instagram.

"Thank you so much British Fashion Council and everyone that made this possible! I can't even begin to process this."
