Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Authorities in Kenya said Wednesday that a man suspected of murder in Massachusetts was rearrested after he escaped local authorities a week earlier while awaiting extradition.
Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations said a "scrupulous intelligence-led operation" with the Ngong Township authorities in Kajiado County led to Kangethe's capture. The DCI did not elaborate on the details of the arrest.
The agency said Kangethe escaped from the Muthaiga Police Station on Feb. 7 where he was being prepared to be transported to Massachusetts on a first-degree murder charge.
The DCI announced a day earlier that it had arrested two men believed to have aided Kangethe in his escape from the Muthaiga jail but declined to go into specifics.
Kangethe is accused in the death of his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu last November and leaving her body in the trunk of a vehicle left at Boston Logan International Airport, Massachusetts State Police said. He allegedly jumped on a plane there to Kenya.
He was initially arrested in Kenya on Jan. 30 after a three-month international manhunt that involved the Massachusetts State Police.
