Strong earthquake shakes Greek island of Crete for 2nd time in 2 weeks

Oct. 12 (UPI) -- For the second time in about two weeks, a powerful earthquake shook the Greek island of Crete on Tuesday.

The 6.4-magnitude quake struck on the island early Tuesday afternoon and was followed by multiple aftershocks, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The National Observatory of Athens' Geodynamic Institute measured the quake at a magnitude of 6.3.

"The quake was felt all over the island, and it did cause concern because we are still feeling the aftershocks from the previous quake," Crete Deputy Regional Gov. Yiannis Leondarakis said, according to the Greek Reporter.

The USGS said the epicenter Tuesday was located just off the southeastern coast of Crete, near Palekastro, at a depth of 6.2 miles.

A 6.0-magnitude quake rattled the island on Sept. 27 and caused the death of one person. Hundreds of homes and businesses were damaged.
