June 21 (UPI) -- Google welcomed the start of the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere with new Doodles Monday.

Google's homepage for those living in the Northern Hemisphere features an animated image of a hedgehog walking with sunglasses. The hedgehog has fruit and plants on its back.

For those in the Southern Hemisphere, the Doodle features the same hedgehog walking through snow with pine cones and leaves on his back.

The search giant celebrates the arrival of the summer and winter solstice every year with new Doodles.

Last year's summer Doodle contained a bright and colorful hot-air balloon being used by a flamingo. The winter Doodle featured a winter-themed hot-air balloon being used by a penguin.

Google recently named Kentucky-based 11th grader Milo Golding the winner of the 2021 Doodle for Google contest. Golding earned a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology package for his school.
