The attacker was shot dead, police said.

The injured were a 23-year-old civilian and 21-year-old soldier.

Police said one of the victims was stabbed in the back. When the soldier tried to intervene, he was also stabbed.

The attack occurred near Israeli Police headquarters.

"An assailant arrived at the light rail station, pulled out a knife and used it to injure two people there," police said, according to the Times of Israel.

"Officers who were on the scene responded quickly, shooting the assailant and neutralizing him."

Investigators did not immediately specify a motive for the attack.
