March 4 (UPI) -- Retail giant Amazon opened its first cashless store in Britain on Thursday, where shoppers can now pick up what they want and entirely bypass a checkout register.
The Amazon Fresh store opened in west London's Ealing district and features "Just Walk Out" technology -- no cashiers and no cash needed. Customers pay for the items online beforehand.
Amazon opened the new 25,000-square-foot store after it spent three years looking for a suitable site.
The store is similar to Amazon Go stores in the United States, which automatically track what products shoppers take or return to smart shelves. The technology, Amazon says, is similar to a self-driving car and uses "computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning."
"[It's a] seismic moment that could play into the next phase of change for the supermarket industry," Shore Capitol analyst Clive Black told The Times.
Amazon opened its first cashier-less Go Grocery supermarket in Seattle last year and had previously opened more than two dozen Amazon Go locations elsewhere in the United States to pilot the technology.
Last summer, Amazon introduced technology that lets shoppers pay with their palm print.
