Former Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj dies at 67

Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Former Indian Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj died Tuesday from cardiac arrest, hospital officials said. She was 67.

She died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in New Delhi.

A member of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, Swaraj served as the foreign minister from 2014 to 2019 during the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She was the second woman in Indian history to hold the post.

Modi mourned her death on Twitter.

"A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who a source of inspiration for crores of people," he tweeted.

Swaraj's remains were transported to her home in New Delhi, where they were on view for public visitation.

Swaraj is survived by her husband, Swaraj Kaushal, and daughter Bansuri, the Press Trust of India reported.
