July 28 (UPI) -- The United States conducted an airstrike it said killed one member of the Islamic State in Somalia, military officials announced Sunday.
U.S. Africa Command said it carried out the airstrike targeting members of IS -- also identified as ISIS, ISIL and Daesh -- Saturday the Golis Mountain region of Somalia in coordination with Somalia's federal government.
The initial assessment determined that one person who played a "key role in facilitation" for IS was killed in the attack and that no civilians were injured or killed.
The command also stated that U.S. forces will "use all effective and appropriate methods," including partnered military operations to protect the Somali people.
"Airstrikes like these remain an effective tool in the counter-terrorist campaign against ISIS and al-Shabab," U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. William West said. "The Federal Government of Somalia and the United States will continue to disrupt terror organization operations and degrade their capabilities whenever possible."
