Dec. 13 (UPI) -- At least nine people died and dozens were injured Thursday when a high-speed train collided with a locomotive, authorities said.
Two carriages overturned on impact, forcing them to crash into an overpass, which then fell on the train, NTV reported. Some passengers became trapped.
The train was traveling from the central Anatolian province of Konya to Ankara. The crash occurred four minutes after the train left the Marsandiz train station.
"There were many injured people waiting to be rescued," Yasin Duvar told CNN, adding that he helped free several people from the mangled train.
It's not clear why the locomotive was on the active commuter line. The train engine is used to perform track inspections.
Twenty-five people died in July when a passenger train derailed near the Turkish town of Corlu.
