Brazil gunman opens fire in cathedral during mass; 4 dead

Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Four people were shot dead in southern Brazil Tuesday by a gunman who opened fire during a mass at the Cathedral of the Campinas.

The man entered the cathedral in Sao Paulo State and started shooting before he turned the .38-caliber handgun on himself.

Firefighters said the shooter killed himself in front of the altar of the church immediately after the attack, G1 Globo reported Tuesday.

Police are looking for a motive but ruled out theft, as it was first reported. None of the victims were immediately identified.

Eight people were injured in the shooting, R7 Noticias reported, citing military police. The dead victims included three men and one woman.

Campinas is located about 50 miles northwest of Sao Paulo, the country's commercial and financial center. It has a population just over one million people.
