Commuter train crashes near Barcelona; 1 dead, 49 hurt

Nov. 20 (UPI) -- A commuter train carrying 133 people derailed Tuesday in Spain's Catalonia region, killing at least one and injuring 49.

The accident occurred in Vacarisses, an hour from Barcelona. Officials said the last two of the six-car train came off of the tracks due to a landslide, rail company Renfe and Catalan police said.

The dead victim was not initially identified. Five were seriously injured and 44 people had minor injuries, El Pais reported. The other 83 passengers were unhurt, authorities said.

The region has been hit by heavy rains in recent days, in a season that's recorded some of its heaviest rainfall in years. Some areas saw more than 5 inches, the Spanish news agency EFE reported.

Catalan deputy premier Pere Aragones told Spanish news agency EFE the rain is to blame for Tuesday's crash.

"It's common sense and evidence shows that the landslide was caused by the rain," Aragones said. "We will have to do a survey and investigate to determine the exact causes but everything indicates that is was due to rain."
