Shark attack kills man in Australia's Cid Harbour

By Danielle Haynes

Nov. 5 (UPI) -- A 33-year-old man died Monday after a shark attack off the central coast of Queensland, Australia, the same location where two tourists sustained bites within a 24-hour period in September, emergency officials said.

The man, a tourist from Victoria, was swimming off a chartered yacht in Cid Harbour, near Whitsunday Island, when a shark bit him on the left thigh, right calf and left wrist.

Paramedics and off-duty doctors and nurses treated the man before he was transported to Mackay Hospital. Emergency workers resuscitated him twice before he died at the hospital.

A crew member of Royal Automobile Club of Queensland, which provided the rescue helicopter that transported the bite victim, described the man's injuries as "absolutely horrific."

"He'd suffered very serious bites, significant blood loss as well as cardiac arrest," Ben McCauley said.

In September, two others sustained shark bites in Cid Harbour, including a 12-year-old girl from Melbourne and a 46-year-old Tasmanian tourist.
