Meghan Markle's visit cut short in Fiji over security concerns

Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Britain's Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle cut her visit to Fiji's capital short Wednesday after she was rushed by a larger-than-expected crowd.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said her "engagement was shortened slightly due to crowd management issues."

Thousands waited hours to see the newest member of the British Royal family. They waved British and American flags as Markle walked through the market.

Wednesday, she met with members of the United Nations Markets for Change project, which encourages an inclusive and safe environment for women vendors in the South Pacific.

As the crowds grew larger, security whisked the Duchess away.

Markle, is pregnant with her first child. She and Prince Harry married in May.

Prince Harry is also in Fiji visiting the Coco-i-Suva forest, part of the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy, a conservation initiative. The Duke of Sussex, who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan, participated in a ceremony at the National War Memorial to commemorate Fijian and British troops.

Harry's grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, visited Fiji 65 years ago.

The Royal couple already visited Australia and will go to Tonga and New Zealand next. They also visited the University of the South Pacific, where Markle talked about the importance of women receiving an education in developing countries.
