June 28 (UPI) -- Prince William visited the tomb of his great-grandmother Thursday, before heading to religious sites in Jerusalem on the final leg of his tour of Israel and Palestinian territories.

The Duke of Cambridge visited the Mount of Olives, where he was briefed on the history of the city before visiting the Church of St. Mary Magdalene.

The prince also visited the Western Wall, the Temple Mount and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher Thursday.

The grave of Princess Alice of Battenberg, William's great-grandmother and former mother in-law to Queen Elizabeth, is located near the Garden of Gethsemane. After her death in London in 1969, she asked to be buried in Jerusalem next to her aunt, who like she had become a nun and founded a convent.

William's is the first official visit by a royal family member since Israel's creation in 1948.
