Officials said the fire is believed to have started in the timber yards. The cause was not immediately known.

The blaze was contained after about two hours. Officials later said at least 15 people died and about 70 were injured.

Millions of dollars worth of property was destroyed at the Gikomba market, including at least 15 residential apartments, emergency officials said.

The market is one of the largest in the city and fires regularly break out there. It's well known for selling clothing, shoes and vegetables -- and also has timber yards that were damaged in the blaze.
