Earthquakes strike Afghanistan, Pakistan

May 9 (UPI) -- A magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck northern Afghanistan and a 5.1-magnitude quake hit northwest Pakistan on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

In both capital cities of Kabul, Afghanistan, and Islamabad, Pakistan, people fled offices and homes while reciting verses from the Koran.

The Pakistani quake, located near the northwestern city of Bannu, injured at least nine children as they rushed out of a school building, some jumping from the second and third floors.

The epicenter of the 6.2-magnitude earthquake was in Tajikistan, a mountainous border region in Afghanistan. Tremors from that quake, which could be felt in Pakistan and parts of north India, did not cause damage or casualties.
